However, even the simplest products are much more complicated than they may appear. Not only do these products need to be conceptualized and designed, they must also be manufactured.

About the programme

Product design is an activity which defines and reflects society and culture, shaping our environment, facilitating daily life and providing a powerful medium for communication and expression. As a product designer you could work in a variety of areas, from manufacturers with in-house design departments to design consultancies.

This well-established and cutting-edge course will give you the skills and guidance you need to develop successful commercial products. You’ll be encouraged to take a creative and innovative approach to problem-solving, while also addressing the functional, social and economic needs of your design.

Your design skills will be developed with the support of dedicated, highly qualified and experienced academics, technicians and demonstrators. The course is equipped with excellent facilities including our manufacturing design centre.

PROGRAMME TYPES

AIM

The college seeks to become a centre of excellence for the training of product designers and to collaborate with industry and research institutions in the areas of design and technology education fueled by research and entrepreneurship. We therefore seek to:

a. Nurture graduates in product design for national development.

b. Produce locally available experts capable of creating jobs in the skill areas.

c. Develop a body of designers able to contribute in a meaningful manner to discussions and debates related to activities in the product design sector.

d. Give students the necessary resources and skills to set up and manage their own businesses through the entrepreneurial courses integrated into the course thereby, easing the unemployment pressure on government

Introduction to Industrial/Product Design

This course introduces students to the subject of Product Design, and ways by which design interacts in the societal and business environment.

Foundations in Technical Drawing

Explaining why technical drawing is an effective way of communicating design concepts and examining industry trends to show why designers, engineers and technologists today have an even greater need to master graphics communication.

Introduction to African Art and Culture

This course is designed to help students understand the society in which they live and perform. The history, practices and beliefs that make up the African society, will be explored and discussed.

Information Communication Technology

This course introduces students to the general concept of computing, the classifications, operations and functions of the computing system, while gaining a fair understanding of the use of Microsoft Office software packages.

Workshop Practices

This course will seek to introduce students to a range of tools and equipment used in the making of products.

Basic Drawing

Introducing students to basic drawing techniques by increasing their observation skills with emphasis on the fundamentals of drawing.

This course is designed to help students develop effective language and study skills for their academic work; improve vocabulary, become familiar with the conventions of standard English Language usage, and develop strategies for preparing for, and taking examinations.

Entry Requirements

 

WASSCE with credits (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects including three (3) Core subjects English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three Elective subjects with a total aggregate of 24 or better.

SSSCE with credits (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) Core subjects English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects with a total aggregate of 24 or better.

GCE Advanced Level with credits in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had Credits (Grade 6 or better) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for Non-Science students) and an Arts subject (for Science students).

Mature Students: Applicants who do not possess the requirement for direct entry may present a portfolio for examination. Such applicants must be at least 25 years old at the time of admisssion and show proof of their age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which must be at least three years old at the time of application.

HND Holders: Applicants must possess a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division in a relevant Area of study from a recognized institution.

Other qualifications including International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum note of 10/20 in each relevant subject, City and Guilds, Technician Part 3 and Advanced Technician Diploma etc., in relevant subjects which are equivalent to the SSSCE/ WASSCE or the GCE will be considered.
